A question for the more technically astute (dont know if that is a) spelt right or b) even a word at all) amoung us, i seem to have a odd situation with ram.

Will be upgrading to Vista 64bit soon so ordered the software and 2 more gig sticks of ram

decided to install the ram today and the new software at the weekend

with the new sticks in, i booted my pc to be faced with an apparently corrupt file called ntkrnlpa.exe with a status of 0xc0000221

i took out the new ram and rebooted straight into windows

left the situation for a couple of hours

put one of the new sticks in, booted fine

put 2nd stick in same issue

have checked my mobo bios version and it is upto date

have swapped teh ram over and both are fine

any suggestions as to a solution, or will this dissappear when i install 64 bit vista

Is all your memory the same type and 2 lots of matched pairs ?

Otherwise if it's dual DDR you're wasting your time.

You shouldn't be using ECC RAM either.

There might be a BIOS setting to disable dual DDR in which case it might boot, but your machine will actually be running slower.

If you have bought non-ECC and matched pairs then your mobo may require you to put one pair in sockets 0 and 2 and the other pair in 1 and 3...though I've seen some where you are meant to use 0 and 1 and then 2 and 3.

Haven't really got enough information to go on here Chris...

Exactly what memory modules did you buy and what mobo have you got ?

Some mobos only accept single sided dimms in all four bank but will use double sided in just two banks.

Corsairs memory configurator shows that the modules should work

Best to try the new set on their own to find out if the kit's naff...

If they work on their own then it's a problem with the two different kits, of course if they don't work then RMA back to Scan

ve always experienced issues with using more than 2 sticks of memory for as long as i've messed with computers.

The problem is although you bought 2 kits seemingly identical, they probably use different ICs underneath (although both are made to the specification of the pack you bought, eg. pc-5300 etc).

either that or your motherboard doesn't like 4 modules (often the case).

Seeing that each kit works fine on it's own, the only advice I have is buy a 4gb (2x 2gb) kit.

swapped out my existing ram with my new sticks on slots 0 and 2 and the system booted, had it running for about an hour after running memtest86 on it

decided to put old ram back in slots 1 and 3 to run the memtest again and the system booting into windows first time

ok this is getting weird, windows was stable for about half an hour after my last post then it blue screened and restarted, and would do about 5 mins after every restart

so i downloaded memtest86+ v2.01 on my powerbook and ran that through the system this morning, very quickly it started giving errors

i left the system testing all today (11hours) and saw that it had managed to pass 13 sets of tests

decided to restart the test 31 mins ago and so far, 66% the way through, had not had an error

could i have someway got it to work due to the testing or is this a false omen - i keep hearing that scan can be quite odd about ram rma's

4 sticks are just never reliable tbh.

get a 4gb (2x 2gb) kit, they are pretty cheap now, and ebay what you already had (rma).
