Lo there everbody

looking to buy a new graphics card some time soon and have narrowed it down to one of two cards, nVidia's 8800 GTS 640Mb card or Ati's 2900XT 512Mb card.

I currently have a X1900XT 512mb card

both the cards i am looking at are around the same price (£250)

i know that ati have teamed up with valve again to give away HL2:EP2/Portal/TF2 with the 2900's

also i am running Vista Prem (i know, shut up)

what do you guys think

I voted for the ATi upgrade becuase:

1) I hear the Vista drivers are currently better (drivers can always change tho of course)

2) I've read some atonishingly geeky detailled articles about the trickery and jiggery pokery that ATi have done on their DirectX chips

and

3) I don't know anyone who has one and want to hear some first-hand experience (utterly selfish  )

I know a lot of peeps are v happy with the NVIDIA GTS though...

I have the 320MB 8800 GTS.  It's around the £200 mark which is a steal.  The extra memory only seems to help in uber-res like 2048x1536.

I don't think I can SLI it though, because although the 975X chipset unofficially supports it hacked drivers are required and so far they have only managed it for the 7xxx series cards.

Still pwns though.

PS the 320MB 8800 will still crush your current X1900XT, 512MB is way overkill for that card.

with that sort of cash you could get yourself something like a nVidia 7600GS, prolly wont play everything at max details but they are credible cards, the 512mb edition from XFX can be found at scan.co.uk for £96 plus delivery or, if you are more of an Ati man then Sapphire have a 256mb X1950 coming soon anagin from scan for £99 plus delivery, would be a better performing card the the 7600 so worth the extra tenner

only sad thing about Nvidia, they dont Anti-Alias and HDR at the same time.. something ATI has done since the X1xxx models...

they seem to have corrected this over sight with the 8800's at least with this little feature

NVIDIA® Lumenex™ Engine:
Delivers stunning image quality and floating point accuracy with ultra-fast frame rates:
16X Anti-aliasing Technology:
Lightning fast, high-quality anti-aliasing at up to 16x sample rates obliterates jagged edges.

128-bit Floating Point High Dynamic-Range (HDR) Lighting:
Twice the precision of prior generations for incredibly realistic lighting effects-now with support for anti-aliasing.

I was going to say, my 8800 can do both simultaneously.

ah they fixed it at last... maybe I'll swap back to nvid with my next card purchase then.. we shall see... be interesting to see what the next 6 months or so of driver tweaks does to the Ati x29's performance, to make it fair on the lead-time Nvid have had to tweakz0r theirs..

atm, performance wise the card produce simular frame rates on dx9 games, dx10 performance using the call of juarez demo seems to be not great but then as tongeh said driver tweeking can fix that. other than that is seems the 8800 GTS consumes less power and is less noisy then the 2900 but the free games is tempting

Can you let me know what the card is like after you have run it for a while?
I'm toying with the idea of getting XFX GeForce 8800 Ultra XXX. But it has to be worth it for that kinda of money especially as i will probably need to upgrade my psu as well. For the outlay I want to see a massive improvement over my XFX7900 gtx512 xxx.

lo bock

had the card in for 5 days now and so far i know the following things

1) its a hell of a lot quiter then my x1900xt, need the mobo splash screen to remind me i have switched on the pc

2) from recent bench marks in custompc the power consumed is much lower

3) runs css on full settings as 150 - 200 fps on 1280x1024

apart from the noise level I'm not seeing much there that an x1950 pro doesn't do...

we're not really gonna know til there's a proper direct-x 10 game out

NVIDIA direct-x 10 cards run direct-x 9 games better than ATi direct-x 10 cards....but what the heck does that mean ?

still sitting on the fence on this one

The 8800 is the first Nvidia card I have owned (for want of a better expression) since the Ti4200. I am very impressed, most of all the value. But like Varp said, there is nothing out yet to really stretch it. I played Lost Planet: Extreme Condition on it and it was smooth as silk and very pretty but that was under XP and DX9.

I installed Vista last night on dual boot, will try it under DX10 when I get home later
