| while i'm not convinced by either side as to what may happen, why not just NOT do it, incase something bad DOES happen.. can't see that we're going to suffer as a result of not running these experiments.. two different banks of scientists give conflicting theories.. why not leave them as theories instead of risking it... life will go on without antimatter proof, higgs boson particles etc etc... i can guarantee you that..
i see lots of Pro-LHD peeps saying 'lalalala same kind of thing was said when they first tested atomic bombs.. blah blah may start a chain reaction' etc etc...
well if people had listened, and not tested them, what a better place the world would have been... no arms race, no overkill weapons, no Cuban Missile crisis.. etc etc.

| I couldnt agree more Tongeh... I understand that we must investigate things and ask the question "why"... But when one of the outcomes (even if 0.0000000000000000000000000001% or whatever it is) could be that existance as we know it COULD happen then the person that gives the go ahead is a fucking moron and should be battered to death with the remains of the machine. Cause if it DID happen then, you can cant even look up to the idiots and say "told you so" Ironic huh!!! | |

Not the fact that it was developed to wipe out nations, but the other work that has actually provided some benefit to mankind certainly is worth it.
My thought has been is the gain worth the downfall. On this, I would say no. Adding credence to the opposition, these are not a bunch of nut cases voicing concern, they are well respected, some being top in their own fields. That does make me concerned.
Suck and see on a global scale has never sat well with me, although the gains that could be made from the LHC would benefit many, eventually.
If I want to get to the real point, if we were wiped out, by anything, I would not feel a sense of anything. What we have done in our history as a species and what will always happen disgusts me. One moment is sheer beauty and amazement of what is and the other one is disgust and dispair at what we are capable of.
If we were to be visited from another planet and we had to showcase us as people over the last 60,000 years, it aint that good.
And finally, we are long long long overdue a cataclysmic event either being a strike from an object, 'super' volcano (Yellowstone) or bug derived.
We have long overstayed out welcome. Become a Buddist, you may get another chance.

| trouble is Yellowstone will have an effect over much of the world i think, a bit like a nuclear winter...
been having a good read of the events around Chernobyl recently.. watched a few documentaries etc... Can I suggest people watch 'Battle of Chernobyl' a Discovery Channel Documentary.. tis over hour long but encapsulates the massive struggle that went on immediately after the explosions. How thousands of people unknowingly gave their lives to stop a meltdown and a worse catastrophe.. its suggested Europe would have been pretty much a no-go area if it hadn't happened, due to a MUCH bigger bang... we were within 24 hours or so of it all going off...
official Russian death toll claim is still apparently 56 people. Choosing to ignore the thousands dead in later years from radiation sickness/poisoning, or dying from thyroid cancers (incidents have increased TENFOLD) etc.. forget the thousands of birth defects across the Ukraine and Belarus since.. take a pinch of salt maybe with the (naturally) MASSIVELY pro-nuclear 'International Atomic Energy Agency's spurious 'less than 4000 Chernobyl related deaths'
That sarcophagus around the reactor is failing.. holes in it you could drive a car thru, and rusting away.. theres plans to spend a billion or more on a new one covering the last.. apparently going to be the 'biggest moveable manmade structure' ever..
still sure atomic/nuclear power has been a good thing ?

I also believe that there is better sources of energy available but 'we' do not have the money or the inclination to do anything with them until the shit hits the fan.
