hmm tough call.. i think quad is probably inching towards being a good move as more and more games are supporting multicore now.. sadly i've got a little lazy with keeping up rigorously with specs on processors over the last year or so, but I know others here can probably tell you a good deal more..

give us an idea of what you want/need/have to spend and we can all give you some guidance.. set a limit and we'll spend it wisely for you...

for example.. you can get some pretty rude graphics performance without going too crazy at the moment. Little and often as an upgrade path seems a sensible move these days, especially with the current mad influx of new hardware, and leaping upwards with dx 9.0x -> dx10 -> dx10.1 I'm used to caning 400 quid on gfx, but my last card was bout 130 and damn good vfm! Windows 7 is 12-18 months away too, and theres talk of dx11 which will undoubtably need new hardware etc to support fully.

For a base unit, I would say £600-£700 - This would include software...

May need some help building it as well....I can supply beer and moist love.

I have a keyboard/mouse/microphone etc from my last rig.

All help is most appreciated.

Good budget - should be able to sling something very respectable together for that...let the window shopping commence - various rig config suggestions to follow

was my first too back in 1997. well apart from my amiga and 3 spectrums, "56k with rubber keys" then 128k with built in tape player, then the mighty black one with a disc drive, still think it was 128k. haha. o and my amiga had 2mb ram and had a hardrive that sounded like a jet engine. pamela anderson poker ftw.
